In Karnataka coffee is a key agricultural product that is GI Tagged because it is influenced by specific local geographical factors like soil and climate that is derived from specific places of origin. An interesting aspect about the Coffees of India, in general, is the fact that they reflect sustainable cultivation, have since long co-existed peacefully with animals, birds and other plants, are among the most biodiversity-friendly cultivations in the world, besides providing a fillip to employment and livelihoods of a large chunk of the multitude in this county. Karnataka is the GI Coffee Hub of India with 5 varieties of coffees from Karnataka having been registered by the Coffee Board with the Geographical Indications (GI) Registry, Govt. of India.
